National Smile Month is an initiative started by the Oral Health Foundation to promote good oral health. Running between 13th May and 13th June this year, it is the largest, and longest-running oral health awareness campaign. It aims to spread the message about maintaining great oral hygiene. It started way back in 1979 and has expanded to reach millions of people through events and activities.
The 3 Key Messages of National Smile Month
It is a well-known fact that children are most vulnerable to gum disease, tooth decay, and other oral health-related issues. Therefore, it’s extremely important to help cultivate good oral hygiene habits among children.
National Smile Month also aims to educate people on why oral health is important and motivate them to spread positive oral health habits by running campaigns, organizing events, classes, and more. Its three key messages include:
- Brush your teeth regularly with a fluoride toothpaste.
- Avoid sugary food and drinks.
- Visit your dentist regularly
What You Can Do in this Month
Oral Health Foundation organizes several events and activities to spread the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene. You can consider participating in some of these activities, including:
All you are required to do is to click pictures of yourself, colleagues, friends, or family with a smile on your face and share it on your social media handle with tagging @smilemonth and using #MySmileySelfie. You can include as many people as you want in your smiley selfie. It could be just you, your workplace group, neighbors, children, or anyone else, even your pets.
Ask a Local Dentist to Visit Your School
If you work at a school, you can ask any local dentist to visit your school to educate your students on the importance of maintaining healthy oral hygiene habits. A dentist can organize several activities at the school to make these sessions interesting.
Brushathon is a fantastic activity to spread the message of good oral health habits. It involves a large group of people, including children who have to brush their teeth simultaneously for two minutes. It involves mass participation, and it also creates a brilliant buzz.
Workshops can be organized at schools, colleges, public places, workplaces, community centers, and other areas where dental practitioners and oral health experts deliver oral health education. They educate the people about oral health benefits, ways to keep teeth white and strong, affordable cosmetic dentistry options, smile makeovers, teeth whitening services, implants, and more. They can also spread the three key messages of National Smile Month in these workshops.
